Skin Pigmentation

A deepening or lightening of skin coloration on a particular area.

What is it?

Skin coloration refers to the tint of a person's skin, which is determined by melanin, a pigment produced by specific skin cells called melanocytes. Melanin is accountable for the hue of your eyes, hair, and most significantly, your skin. Abnormal or inconsistent skin coloration can arise due to various reasons including, but not limited to, abundant sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations, certain drugs, and skin trauma. Some individuals may encounter pigmentation disorders such as hyperpigmentation (dark skin patches) or hypopigmentation (light skin patches). Genetics also contribute to an individual's skin coloration.

How is it treated?

Our board-certified dermatologists in Avon, Sandusky, Broadview Heights, Medina, Port Clinton and Strongsville, Ohio, can help to resolve issues related to skin coloration. Utilizing a variety of techniques to identify the causes and types of pigmentation, they can devise a personalized treatment strategy. This could encompass topical creams or lotions, laser procedures, chemical exfoliations, or microdermabrasion, among other treatments. Furthermore, our dermatologists can advise on essential lifestyle and skincare modifications to safeguard your skin from additional harm. Book a consultation with one of our dermatologists if you would like to explore solutions to address uneven or abnormal skin tone.
